Meet Deborah Sampson: Discover the Story behind Her Secret!
How did she hoodwink the Continental Army?
Deborah Sampson was a poor, ordinary woman - who hoodwinked George Washington’s army! Why? Deborah had a dream. She wanted to be a soldier. However, because she was a woman, the only way to achieve this dream was to convince everyone she was a man
And she did!
Massachusetts native Deborah Sampson is the only woman known to have disguised herself as a man and serve as a soldier in the Continental Army without getting caught!
How did she do it?
Children have an opportunity to Celebrate Women’s History Month by coming to meet Deborah. They will hear the story behind her legendary secret - straight from the soldier herself!! They will learn about the terrifying close calls, mountainous obstacles, and head-scratching problems this poor young woman faced, as she risked flogging and imprisonment to help free the Colonies from English rule.
They will follow Deborah around the farm as an 8-year-old indentured servant, onto the battlefield, and into a cave. Will she become trapped in that cave?
Children will be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at this dangerous, principled deception and come to know the character of the humble heroine who pulled it off.
